CANTONMENTS

Cantonments is one of the preferred areas for most expats living in Accra, Ghana. A neighbourhood that used to house colonial-era workers, Cantonments was one of Accra’s foremost-created neighbourhoods. Cantonments is located 5 km west of Kwame Nkrumah Circle and 10 minutes’ drive southwest of the Kotoka International Airport. You will find the same calibre of people living here as those who reside in Airport Residential area. In terms of accommodation, you’re likely to find three to four-bedroom gated communities here. The neighbourhood is primarily home to those in the upper-middle income bracket.

This area is popular for gated communities, apartments and townhouses. A couple of embassies are also located here. Cantonments is home to good schools such as The Ghana International School (GIS) and The Morning Star School.

Popular landmarks include American Embassy, PWC Tower, Huawei building, Togo Embassy and Cantonments Post office.

LABONE

Labone is a district of Accra bounded to the south by Labadi Road. Cantonments Road serves as the district’s western boundary, while Labadi Crescent is the eastern boundary. The Ring road separates Labone from the southern district of Osu. As an extension of touristy, Labone offers a mix of houses dating from the early 20th century. Unlike Osu, however, Labone remains largely residential albeit with the siting of some embassies.

This area is popular for gated communities, apartments and townhouses. Over the years, the main Labone road has transformed from residential use to commercial use and is home to restaurants, cafés, banks and many businesses.

Popular landmarks include The Edge (home to Brasa Restaurant and Milkbox), Ecobank Labone branch, Labone coffee shop, Bosphorus Restaurant, Moka’s, Bistro 22, Palace Mall and Pinkberry.

AIRPORT CITY

Airport City is located in-between the Kotoka International Airport and Airport Residential area. About three decades ago, the 43-acre land on which the Airport City currently sits was without form and was void.  This area began to take the shape of modernity when it was designated as part of the Accra Redevelopment Scheme in the late 90s and today it is the most expensive location in the city of Accra and known for its high-rise commercial buildings and ultra-modern architecture.  This location is also home to some fantastic international hotels and some great restaurants.

Popular landmarks in the area include Stanbic Heights, Airport Shell, Marina Mall, Silverstar Tower, Atlantic Tower, Accra Marriott Hotel, CFAO and Holiday Inn.

AIRPORT RESIDENTIAL AREA

Airport Residential Area is a serene, cool and comfortable place to live in Accra. It is located West of the Kotoka International Airport. There are a lot of houses in this area in which most of them are old and have been renovated and refurbished to meet the modern standards for houses and apartments. Apart from this, new completed apartments and townhouses have sprung up in the area with further constructions on going.

This area is also home to many hotels, embassies, offices, great cafés and fantastic restaurants. A few schools are located in the area with Association International School being the most popular.

Popular landmarks include Nyaho Medical Center, Koala, Zimbabwe Embassy, Association International School, Premier Place, Mirage Apartments, Kwarleyz, First National Bank, Meridian Apartments and Airport View Hotel.

AIRPORT WEST

Airport West is also serene, cool and comfortable place to live in Accra. It is located West of the Kotoka International Airport. There are a lot of houses in this area in which most of them are old and have been renovated and refurbished to meet the modern standards for houses and apartments. Apart from this, new completed apartments and townhouses have sprung up in the area with further constructions on going.

This area is also home to many hotels, embassies, offices, great cafés and fantastic restaurants. A few schools are located in the area with Association International School being the most popular.

Popular landmarks include Villagio, Kōzo Restaurant, Airport West Hotel, Canadian Visa Application Center, Greystone Apartments, Mary Mother of Good Counsel Catholic Church and The African Regent Hotel.

RIDGE

The area of North Ridge, West Ridge, and East Ridge is collectively referred to as “The Ridge.” North Ridge is a neighborhood in the city of Accra, Ghana bounded to the south by Castle Road. The Kanda highway serves as the district’s western boundary, while the Independence Avenue/Liberation Avenue is the eastern boundary. The Ring road separates North Ridge from the northern district of Kanda. The headquarters of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) is located in North Ridge. Originally planned as a neighborhood for civil servants and businessmen in the colonial era, North Ridge remains one of the better residential neighborhoods in Accra.

This area is populated by several major embassies including those of Germany and the United Kingdom. In addition, several of Accra’s upmarket hotels as well as several Ghanaian administrative offices are located in this neighborhood.

Popular landmarks in the area include Ecobank Headquarters, Advantage Place, Kempinski Hotel, Movenpick Hotel, World Trade Center, National Theatre and Accra Ridge Church.

DZORWULU

Dzorwulu is a town in the Accra Metropolitan district, a district of the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. It is located next to Abelempke and Roman Ridge. The best part of Dzorwulu is in the west, from the highway exit to Liberation Road and is called Airport West. North Dzorwulu is a small enclave located north of the Olusegun Obasanjo Highway.

Dzorwulu has a number of restaurants, banks and office complexes. It is home to several shops and schools with Alsyd Academy being the popular one. This area is well-developed.

Popular landmarks in this area include Max Mart Express, Fiesta Royale Hotel, Tullow Oil Headquarters, Bulk Oil Stroage and Transportation (BOST), National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Petroleum Commission, 335 Place and Special Ice.

OSU

Osu is a district in central Accra known for its busy commercial, restaurant and nightlife activities It is locally known as the “West End” of Accra and is home to the famous Oxford Street. Bounded to the south by the Gulf of Guinea, Osu’s western boundary is the Independence Avenue. Ring Road separates Osu from the northern district of Labone.

Osu has large supermarkets and appliance shops with Oxford Street mall being the biggest. The area is known for its numerous restaurants and nightlife locations. Osu is the liveliest part of Accra and Ghana as a whole and it is the most preferred hangout location for tourists visiting the city of Accra. Most of the foreigners or expats enjoy hanging out in Osu because the town hosts people with diverse cultures and entertainment from different countries.

Popular landmarks in the area include No. 1 Oxford Street building, Oxford Street Mall, Koala, Woodin, Papaye Restaurant and KFC.

KANDA

Kanda is a neighborhood in the city of Accra, Ghana bounded by the Kanda highway and the Independence Avenue/Liberation Avenue.

This area is home to the office of the President (Jubilee House) and Kanda Post office. Kanda is undergoing a commercial transformation and over the years, commercial buildings such as The Rhombus, The Alberts, Urban Square, Mountcrest University, Atlantic Computers, Premier Place, SU Tower among others have evolved. There are still many self-compound houses as well as a few apartments in the area.

EAST LEGON

East Legon is located further of the city, just northeast of the Tetteh-Quarshie interchange next to Accra Mall that gives access to the Accra-Tema motorway and the N1 highway. It is noted for its modern low-rise apartment blocks and detached houses; older buildings have been renovated to look very new; some areas are still to be redeveloped.  East Legon is undoubtedly one of the most popular areas in Accra. The famous Lagos Avenue which has transformed from residential to commercial over the years is home to many banks, restaurants and shops.

Popular landmarks in this area include A&C Shopping mall, Melcom, Starbites, East Legon Police Station, Lycée Français d’Accra.

ADJIRINGANOR

Adjinganor is an extension of East Legon and this area goes up to Trasacco Valley.

It is undoubtedly one of the most popular areas in Accra which has opened up over the last 10-15 years with a lot of residential developments. The main Adjiringanor Road has transformed from residential into commercial and a lot of retail shops, filling stations and banks are located there.

Popular landmarks include 69, Pistis, Puma Energy, Ability Square, Potbelly Shack, Coco Vanilla and Cahaya.

EAST AIRPORT

East Airport is another area that has opened up over the past few years especially with the opening of the famous Palace Mall. This area is bounded by Spintex Road. The main Martey Tsuru road in the area connects to many residential apartments, self-compound houses and schools such as East Airport International School.

TSE ADDO

Tse Addo is simply the new prime Accra. This area is bounded by Trade Fair all the way through to Tse Addo roundabout. It is a few minutes’ drive from the famous Airport Hills, Chain Homes and Mayfair Estates. After the construction and opening of the Mahama Road in 2016, Tse Addo has opened up and offers a lot of residential developments such as apartments, gated communities, townhouses and self-compound houses.

Popular landmarks in the area include Bakeshop classics, Plaspack (DVLA), Goil filling station and Vista Del Mare.

EAST LEGON HILLS

East Legon Hills is one of the hot areas in Accrawith a lot of residential developments happening.  It is located in between Ashaley Botwe and Ashaiman. It constitutes Nanakrom, Santeo and Nmai Dzorn. The main road which is called Nmai Dzorn – Papafio Hills road connects all these three areas. East Legon hills is home to many apartments, townhouses, self-compund houses and gated communities.

Popular landmarks in this area include Richfield Lifestyle Estates, Paradise Estates, Redrow Estates, Melcom – Nanakrom, Bloom Mart, British International School.

SPINTEX

Spintex is a suburb of Accra and is originally just a name for the popular Spintex road, which starts from Accra Mall and ends at Sakumono junction but it has somehow become the name tagged along most neighbourhoods in and around the main Spintex road. The area has many shops, restaurants and offices. Spintex has become a well-known residential area. The main Spintex road has transformed into the location for many banks, restaurants, warehouses and industries. A few car dealers can also be located along the main Spintex road with the popular ones being Fairlop and Sneda Motors.

Popular landmarks include Action Chapel, Orca, Furniture City, Papaye Restaurant, Palace Roundabout, Oak Plaza Hotel and Coca-Cola Roundabout.

TEMA

Tema is now a major trading centre, home to an oil refinery and numerous factories, and is linked to Accra by a highway and railway. Tema Port which was opened in 1962 is one of Ghana’s two deep seaports, the other being Sekondi-Takoradi. It has many communities from community 1 to 26.

Most communities in Tema are residential with self-compound houses and blocks of flats. Such places include Sakumono, Community 18, 19, 20, 25 amongst others

Popular landmarks in the area include Tema Port, Gridco, Tema Freezones, Junction Mall, Community 25 Mall, KFC – Community 18 junction.
